This violin is labeled Regraduated and Repaired by O.H. Bryant Boston USA 1919. A very nice instrument. LOB 358mm.
This violin was re-graduated in 1919 by O.H. Bryant, a
maker who worked in New London before settling in Boston after 1910. He was
employed by Elias Howe & Co. and Oliver Ditson & Co., and worked off of the
Guarneri del Gesł model. Bryant was recognized in his day as one of three old
violin experts in the U.S., and personally examined and measured more than 25 of
the finest Stradivaris, Guarneris, Bergonzis, Guadagninis, and Amatis. He was
the principal repairer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and was known to be
particularly skilled in rejuvenating old and decrepit instruments into once
again fine violins. He was also an inventor, who perfected an amber oil varnish
of all shades which was highly regarded by his contemporaries and connoisseurs
alike.
This instrument is a c. 19th century German made
violin with a Stradivarius style body and a honey amber oil varnish. It has a
two-piece back with ascending patches of dark flame and medium curl. The top has
a fine grain, widening drastically towards the flanks and finishing medium. LOB
358mm. A beautiful violin, which appears to be free of repair since its
re-graduation in 1919. A steal for $3,500.00! Nicely adjusted and setup with
Dominant strings. Price reflects instrument only.
