This unlabeled violin is most likely Saxon made. Nicely adjusted, instrument only. LOB 358 mm.
Saxon violin are known for their dark varnish and square
shoulders. They are usually old; pre Franco-Prussian war and tend to have a
Baroque sound quality. They have wide, clunky proportions and, while typically
viewed as inferior to Italian standards, are generally speaking, good buys.
This violin is in great shape considering its age (c.
1820). Although it has been repaired, the scroll is original to the instrument.
The body style is that of an Amati, with the typical dark brown to black varnish
over a rich, deep amber ground. The top is of medium grain, widening at the
flanks, and the two-piece back has a broad flame, slightly descending from the
center with a strong curl that intensifies towards the lower portion of the
back. LOB 358 mm. Nicely adjusted and setup with Dominant strings. Price
reflects instrument only.
