An outstanding hand-made violin by Bohemian luthier Tomas Skála. Made in 1999 (Op. 60). An incredible value at only $2,500. Nicely setup by Mystic Violin. LOB 360 mm.
Tomas Skála, born in 1970 in Mlada Boleslav (a town in
former Czechoslovakia), is considered one of the finest contemporary makers of
European violins. He studied in several prominent workshops throughout Central
Europe, but his principal teacher was Emil Lupac- master violin maker and
teacher of the current generation of violin makers in Bohemeia, Moravia, and
Slovakia- as well as Skála’s father-in-law. Skála today lives and works in
Bohemia, where he shares a workshop with Emil Lupac, crafting violins, violas,
and cellos from the patterns of Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesů.
This violin (Op. 60) was made by Skála in 1999, after the
luthiers of Luby unionized in an effort to bring their instruments to the West.
The label, reading “Luby u Chebu”, is hand-signed by the maker. The body pattern
is Stradivari, with a bright amber spirit varnish. The top is of medium-fine
grain spruce, widening towards the flanks, and the two-piece back is of
beautiful maple, tightly-flamed and ascending slightly from the center with a
vibrant curl. LOB 360 mm.
With Skála’s new violins going for nearly $7,000.00 on the
market today, this instrument is an incredible value at only $2,500.00. Nicely
adjusted and set up with Dominant strings. Price reflects instrument only. Be
