For centuries, gut strings were the only available option for performers, composers, and instrument makers. In these early days, the string maker worked in 12 hour shifts cleaning, soaking, striping, and twisting the sinewy intestines of animals before winding them into strings. He worked in foul conditions and never received credit in the history books for his work. Even though these unique artisans will always remain anonymous to us, no one can ever doubt the importance of their art, nor the indispensable role they played in the history of stringed instruments.

Over the years, the string making process has evolved significantly, yielding an impressive assortment of steel, nickel, aluminum, and synthetic strings suited for performers of all ages, levels, and music styles. And, of course, the descendants of the string makers of yesteryear continue the legacy of their fathers, using the same time-honored techniques to make gut strings still available to us today.
